The North High Bio-Med program is an advanced level science program that prepares students for the rigors of college and in science and health related careers. This is a four-year program, and most of our students continue in college toward their original goal. However, we are designed so that if a student changes their mind, as many students do, they will not have to exit the program and will still receive a valuable science background that will enhance their resume as well as applications for colleges/scholarships.
The health science curriculum is embedded in our Bio-Med classes so that students follow our four year path and receive their necessary science credits for graduation, as well as fulfill the health science portion of our program.
This year we have added all four levels of Project Lead the Way: Bio-Medical Sciences elective courses to our program. Project Lead The Way (PLTW) is the leading provider of rigorous and innovative Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education curricular programs used in elementary, middle, and high schools across the U.S. The hands-on, project-based Bio-Medical Science courses engage students on multiple levels, expose them to areas of study that they typically do not pursue, and provide them with a foundation and proven path to college and career success.

Of course you will also take the required core classes in English, Social Studies, Math and PE while leaving room for elective courses. We always encourage our students to take advanced courses in all core subjects as well as a foreign language which is highly valued when working in any health related field.

Senior year is a certification pathway year. As of this year, we have two pathways for students to choose from. The following details those pathways:
- Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) pathway: This course is taught by instructors from Hutchinson Community College. Students receive ten college credit hours that are paid for through the grant that funds our program. Students are responsible for paying for books and their certification test. This program is designed for individuals interested in providing medical care to patients in the pre-hospital setting. This includes both volunteer and career emergency medical services, fire service and any first responder agency. The program will provide the student with opportunities to gain information, skills and develop the positive attitude necessary for certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).
- Certified Nurse Aid (CNA): This course is taught through Wichita Area Technical College. Students receive college credit hours that are paid for through the grant that funds our program. The Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) program prepares students to be caregivers in nursing homes while working under the supervision of licensed nurses. The instruction includes classroom, laboratory and clinical experiences. Students must successfully complete a competency skills checklist, maintain attendance as defined in the course syllabus and achieve satisfactory grades. Classes meet for approximately five weeks, and evening classes meet for approximately three months. The program meets the guidelines of the Kansas Department on Aging and Disability Services and graduates may take the state examination to become CNAs after successful completion of the course.
- Certified Medication Aid (CMA): This course is taught through Wichita Area Technical College. Students receive college credit hours that are paid for through the grant that funds our program. The Certified Medication Aide course focuses on the knowledge and skills needed for safe medication administration in long-term care facilities. Graduates are eligible to take the Kansas certification examination to become certified. This course builds upon the role of a certified nurse aide (CNA) and includes accurately measuring, administering and documenting medications to residents.
